Your Auto Insurance and the Change to Utah Code 41-12a-301

A recent change in Utah state law mandates an important update for all vehicle owners. If you have a vehicle that is operated on highways, quasi-public roads, parking areas, or registered within the state, you're now required to maintain liability insurance for the entire duration of the vehicle's registration. This also applies to recreational or seasonal use vehicles.

Why This Change Matters

Prior to the change, seasonal use vehicles or off-road recreational vehicles could be removed from the insurance during off-season or changed to comprehensive-only coverage. However, this change with the state law will not allow for the same practices.

What You Need to Know

Here are some essential points about the new law:

  • Who is affected: All vehicle owners, including those with recreational vehicles, that operate on public roads and/or are registered with the state.
  • Coverage timing: Insurance must be maintained throughout the vehicle's registration period.

How to Stay Compliant

If you haven’t already updated your insurance policy, now is the time. Contact your insurance provider to confirm that your current policy has all registered vehicles listed. If adjustments are needed, they can guide you on the necessary steps to ensure full compliance.
